#MeToo

As early as 2006 The Me too campaign has been going. It all started Tarana Burke, a civil rights activist started it as a campaign to help young women, particularly of colour. In October 2017 Alyssa Milano used the name and hashtag-ed it and encouraged women to speak out about their experienced of sexual harassment or assault. The hashtag quickly went viral and Milano then referred back to Burke as the originator by tweeting:

“I was just made aware of an earlier #MeToo movement, and the origin story is equal parts heartbreaking and inspiring”

It’s 2018 and the hashtag is still being used and has been used over 12 million times. The me too movement is being used now as a platform for women to name and shame people like Harvey Weinstein who was accused by over 80 women in the film industry.

The Me Too moment has even had attention from men. Actor Terry Crews shared his story recently about being sexually assaulted and how he overcame it.

The Metoo movement is such an important topic in society, this is a reason why it’s gone viral. People can see that it’s an issue and they want change as soon as possible and they want justice. Celebrities use their platform to make a way for change to happen like actress Sophia Bush.

Bush recently opened up about her experience about sexually harassment by One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn.

Sophia Bush and other cast and crew members signed a letter that accused Schwan of these actions.

Sophia bush does everything she can to make change in every way.

Many believe the #Metoo movement is a good place to start when telling your story.

Back at the recent Golden Globes awards, many celebrities wore black to the red carpet event in support of the MeToo movement. A new hashtag was started for that event and it was even trending on twitter

#whywewearblack was from the celebrities in support of the #metoo movement.

Burke said in an interview that if it wasn’t for celebrities supporting the campaign, she doesn’t think it would have gotten this much attention due to the fact that it originally started as a place for young women of colour. She strongly believes that the black community is still not supported as much as other races.

Today Tarana Burke is still doing work to make a change for women.

‘Me too’ was just two words; it’s two magic words that galvanised the world.
